Hop to it, because it’s Chinese New Year – the Year of the Rabbit!
From the 28th of January to the 13th of February, the City of Sydney is helping to ring in the Chinese New Year in style. With a veritable cornucopia of exciting and free events, you can join in on the festivities of the Year of the Rabbit.
Come along to the Chinese New Year Twilight Parade on Sunday 6th February, where you will see 250 visitors from Hubei perform Wudang martial arts, and the unique Tujia Waving Hand Dance. There will be various musicians including hip hop artists and more traditional performers. The night culminates in Chinese Fireworks at Cockle Bay. The parade begins at Sydney Town Hall and continues down to China Town.
Fancy a spot of Dragon Boat Racing? Enjoy the 12th – 13th of February at Darling Harbour, where the southern hemisphere’s largest group of dragon boat enthusiasts will be racing! Did you know that before a boat can enter the water in a dragon boat race, it needs to be ‘awakened’ by painting on its eyes? Enjoy all the drama, splashing and beating drums of the dragon boat race!
If you are Sydney-based and plan to get in on the festivities, make sure to visit the official Sydney Chinese New Year site, where you can download a New Year’s App with the full timetable of events.
